OUT OF THE SADDLE!
CYCLIST Richard Gregg has taken a break from his round-the-world
trip to go to his brother's wedding.
But his short stay at home has not deterred him from continuing
the journey which he estimates will take him several years.
He is eager to get back in the saddle and head for the Himalayas,
the place he most wants to see in the world.
Richard, aged 27, whose parents live at Rustlings Road, Ranmoor,
has had a yearning to travel ever since his school days at High
Storrs.
Major back surgery for a prolapsed disc in 1988 at King Edward
Hospital, Sheffield, ensured that he could fulfill his dream.
"I was getting a lot of pain in my left leg and could barely
walk down the road, let alone ride a bike. I'm concerned now to
hear that the hospital might close, "said Richard.
After completing s mechanical engineering course he moved to
London. "I wanted to go somewhere which I didn't particularly
like, so that I wouldn't settle down and would want to leave,"
be said.
Richard set off from Sheffield last summer and headed for Egypt
and then down into Kenya, from where he flew to Pakistan.
His brother suddenly decided to get married, so Richard returned
home, leaving his bike and cycling gear in Karachi.
He will return there in the next month to continue in the Himalayas,
then to India, Nepal and China and eventually to Japan, where
he hopes to teach English to fund his flight to Australia.
On his travels he is raising money for the Third World development
charity Intermediate Technology.
