Dutchman
Maarten and I crossed spokes on
the Karakoram Highway in northern Pakistan, spring 1992, and we
rode that famous road northward together for a while. His recording
of the sound of chapati making; his hilarious mimicking of buffaloes
eating flour in the market and the bus-men calling their distinations;
and his way of bumping his head in the same doorway is me even
though he is somewhat shorter, made him a top trail-companion.
Subsequently we kept in touch and his imaginative and fresh writing
as he too crossed the globe by bicycle (Africa, Tibet, South America
Australia and much more), helped me keep my spirit of travelling
as well as split my sides in several places. Put yourself by his
side on his wild and rugged road, by going to his pages that we
are honoured to present ourselves in the Digital-Mines.
